Getting Sober

Getting sober sucks. You know why I drank? Because it was fun…for a long time anyway.  After a while though the alcohol turned on me, my best friend had become my torturer and the mornings of hangovers were unbearable. So how did I sober up?

First thing is to just sober up. How do you do that, well you need to pass the time and for me that meant getting active which in turn can speed up the process.

-       Go for a run – Definitely the best as the time goes by, you stop thinking about drinking and you’re getting rid of the toxins

-       Play a video game – Well yes…certainly passes the time

-       Go to sleep! Get plenty of rest, the hangover can be the worst so just knocking out can really do the work

-       Go for a swim – Again more exercise, great for you and passes the time until you feel better about getting sober

-       Talk to people! Seriously, I was a sales rep doing cold calling for years, every morning I was hung over talking to people on the phone made the time go by

-       Go see a movie – Keeps you entertained

It takes about as many hours or as many days of drinking to sober up, if you were out getting trashed for the last 8 hours…expect about 8 hours to feel better. During this time there are a number of things you can do to speed up the process of feeling better:

-       Electrolytes – Your body is depleted so getting sober requires drinks like Gatorade if you can get it

-       Tomato juice, V8 – This has a lot of mineral and vitamins you just took out of your body, hope you enjoyed your binge so drink up!

-       Exercise – Again it passes the time but gets your blood going while speeding up the sobering up process

-       Water – A boat load! A glass of water for every beer or cocktail to start

-       Time – Yup, sorry but you did some pretty bad things to your body, so now we need to stay hydrated and give it time

Now that you’ve sobered up how do you stay sober? Well for starters you need to resolve to stay sober, most people who have decided they are alcoholics had to hit a bottom, this means the situation got so bad and the person so desperate that they realized they had to quit. If you want to stop than you need to stay busy, stay away from alcohol at all costs and mostly start a new network of people in sobriety. Birds of a feather certainly do flock together and staying sober means hanging out with other people who want to quit and stay quit. That’s another article though.
